The campaign is for the Pretensioner Seat belts. When the
vehicles were assembled the pretensioner unit has a safety
lock mechanism that stops the pretensioner from firing.
It was thought that the trim panel covering the seat belt
unit could not be fitted if the safety lock was on. It appears
that in the 1998 model year Legacy and Outback, it is possible
to install the trim panel with the safety lock on. There
are some 804 vehicles affected in New Zealand.
Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) the makers of Subaru have confirmed
that the seat belt function will operate correctly, even though the
pretensioner is disarmed. Combined in this recall is the removal
of some foam insulation on the Outback. In the event of an accident
and the pretensioner firing the heat generated from this may cause
some insulation to melt. In one reported case this foam caught fire
after the accident.
