We wish to advise of a Safety Related Recall to check for a possible
fuel tank leak in all MY99, 2000 and 2001 Legacy & Outback vehicles.
This action has become necessary due to a report from the manufacturer of Subaru
vehicles (Fuji Heavy Industries), of the discovery in Japan of cracks in the
seam of the fuel tank on two vehicles. An investigation subsequently revealed
improper breathing of the fuel tank, due to a failure to remove a blanking plug
in a breather line during production. The repeated expansion and contraction
of the tank over a period of time due to the improper breathing can cause the
seams to crack with subsequent fuel leakage when the tank is full.
The estimated incidence of the failure to remove the blanking plugs is less than
0.133% and the number of reported leaking tanks is only two worldwide.
