Models: 1997 Subaru Impreza and Legacy
We wish to advise of a potential safety issue with your
Subaru Legacy/Impreza where the Supplementary Restraint
System Air Bag may deploy when the Air Bag warning lamp
is illuminated in the combination meter.
The activation of the Air Bag can be caused by using excessive
force when pressing the horn button or by grounding the
vehicle body onto the road surface.
This recall only affects Japanese Domestic Market vehicles
that have been imported into New Zealand and have a driver’s
side single air bag. There are some 67,000 vehicles affected
in Japan, and to date Subaru Japan have only received 9
reports of Air Bag deployment.
If the SRS waring lamp illuminates, drive the vehicle with
extreme caution. Avoid excessive force when pressing the
horn and do not drive the vehicle over kerbs or into deep
undulations in the road surface where the vehicle chassis
may make contact with the road.
You should immediately contact your Authorised Subaru Dealer
for an appointment to have the Air Bag control module replaced.
Your Subaru dealer will perform this repair at no cost
to you. The rectification involves the installation of a
replacement control module, a task that only takes around
15 minutes to complete. However, it may be necessary to
leave your vehicle longer to allow your dealer flexibility
in scheduling. Please ring your Authorised Subaru Dealer
to make an appointment. Dealers will make every effort to
attend to this matter as soon as possible.
