Ruapehu Alpine Lifts
Subaru - The official vehicle supplier of Mount Ruapehu
This year marks 22 years of partnership between Subaru and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Limited (RAL), which runs the two commercial ski fields on Mt Ruapehu – Turoa and Whakapapa.
Subaru of New Zealand has been the official vehicle supplier to RAL since 1998, initially with Turoa, and then to both Whakapapa and Turoa, following the merger. Now 22 years on in 2020, we are excited to continue this partnership with our All-Wheel Drive vehicles taking the RAL team safely up the mountain.
This long-standing partnership has seen Subaru and RAL host Subaru drivers at the ski fields for events such as Subaru Top Weekend in the past, and this year will be doing something different, with the launch of Subaru Snow Week which will take place in September 2020.
Subaru Snow Week

The Subaru and RAL partnership
Subaru and RAL have been partnering for decades, and in 2018, Subaru and RAL celebrated a milestone anniversary of 20 years of ‘do’-ing Ruapehu together, with the RAL team having a fleet of Subarus all year round to get them up and down the mountain safely, no matter what the conditions. 2020 marks 22 years of partnership between the two brands.
“From our perspective, Subarus are the ideal vehicles for our team to be driving on and around Mt Ruapehu. Subarus perform on the road in any situation; they also handle the icy conditions we encounter each winter,” the RAL team says.
“It’s a great connection for both companies because we are a similar size and work in similar ways. Most importantly, the people who ski with Mt Ruapehu are also Subaru people, so our customers are frequently the same people. There are definitely synergies and benefits for both companies through this vehicle supply agreement and our team feel privileged to drive Subarus.”
Mt Ruapehu, in the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, is not only a fantastic winter playground for skiers and boarders, as sightseers can also enjoy a spectacular ride on New Zealand's longest gondola, the Sky Waka. It offers awe-inspiring views of the World Heritage National Park from the comfort of a 10-seater cabin.
The many excellent walking trials make Ruapehu an enjoyable summer destination as well.
Driving in snowy or wintery conditions is not something you do every day, so if you’re heading to Mt Ruapehu to ski this winter, or on a road trip with the family, it’s important to ensure you know how to drive in wet or icy conditions, as they can change quickly.
Knowing the challenges of driving on icy roads, the Subaru team has put together some helpful winter driving tips to help keep you and your family safe on the roads, wherever you're headed this season.
