Every element of the all-new Forester’s design has been crafted with purpose. Its more upright front stance features a sharp, chiselled grille flanked by signature C-shaped LED headlights — giving a confident look that hints at capability beneath. Strong shoulders, vertical surfaces, and squared-off arches signal robust SUV performance, while the bolder black cladding reinforces its off-the-beaten-track credentials.

Practicality hasn’t been forgotten. Wide-opening doors and a squarer rear gate make it easier to load the kids' bikes, the surfboards, or the camping kit. A reworked roofline improves aerodynamics without compromising that all-important headroom.

Every Forester variant wears a lightweight aluminium bonnet — a strategic design choice that enhances pedestrian safety through improved energy absorption in the event of impact. Its prominent sculpting reinforces Forester’s commanding SUV identity.

Select grades also feature sleek slim-line roof rails, which maintain aerodynamic efficiency while providing added utility for carrying cargo, bikes or adventure gear. Other variants adopt practical matte black ladder-style rails that prioritise function and load flexibility.

Headlights and Taillights

All Forester variants feature C-shaped LED headlights, contributing to the vehicle’s confident and modern appearance while improving visibility in low-light conditions. All variants offer Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) functionality for improved night-time visibility and reduced glare. Integrated LED fog lights help you see, and be seen, in New Zealand’s more challenging weather.

Exterior Mirrors

Forester’s exterior mirrors have been optimised for both aerodynamic efficiency and rearward visibility. All models include heated, power-adjustable mirrors, while higher grades add passenger mirror auto-dipping and memory functions. Their low wind-noise design complements the overall quiet cabin experience.

Wheels and Tyres

Wheel design has been carefully curated to reflect the intent of each grade. Depending on the variant, the Forester rides on either 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels, each with distinctive finishes — from dark grey metallics to machined or gloss face treatments — that speak to the balance between urban style and off-road strength.

The AWD Hybrid Sport also introduces a bronze finish alloy wheel exclusive to this grade, adding a unique visual point of difference.

AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

Aerodynamic performance has been carefully refined across the all-new Forester through a comprehensive approach to airflow management. Subaru engineers used extensive simulations and real-world testing to reduce turbulence and drag across various driving scenarios, resulting in improved straight-line stability, reduced body sway and quieter, more composed handling. Key changes implemented to improve aerodynamics include:

  • The redesigned roofline, front under spoilers, and sculpted side surfaces promote smoother airflow around the body.
  • A front air outlet at the rear of the front fender helps reduce pressure build-up in the wheel housing, minimising lift and enhancing front tyre contact.
  • A lower-profile front mud guard base directs airflow away from the front tyres, further limiting turbulence.
  • Controlled airflow inside the tyre housing and optimised cladding and rear spoiler shape contribute to a secure steering feel and stable cornering.

The result is reduced wind noise and a more stable driving experience, especially at highway speeds or in crosswind conditions.

POWERTRAINS

The all-new Forester offers a choice of two powertrains, a refined petrol-only option and Subaru’s next-generation Strong Hybrid system. Both powertrains are matched to transmissions engineered for smooth operation and confident handling across varied conditions.

PETROL ENGINE

2.5-litre Subaru Boxer Engine

The all-new Forester carries forward Subaru’s trusted 2.5-litre direct-injection Boxer engine, now refined to deliver greater comfort, reliability and performance. While the core architecture remains familiar, a series of enhancements have been made to improve dynamic response and reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The engine maintains its high 12:1 compression ratio and uses a direct-injection fuel system that delivers efficiency and responsiveness. The engine delivers 136kW of power at 5,800 rpm, with torque increased to 247Nm at 3,700 rpm. Thanks to its broad, flat torque curve, the updated 2.5-litre Boxer provides smooth and responsive acceleration across a range of real-world driving conditions, whether overtaking on the highway, towing, or heading off for a weekend getaway.

Mechanical refinements include updates to the auxiliary belt system, chain guide and tensioner, as well as fuel injection optimisation. These changes contribute to a quieter, smoother engine feel and a more comfortable experience for the driver and passengers.

HYBRID SYSTEM

Next-generation Strong Hybrid e-Boxer system

The all-new Forester Hybrid introduces Subaru’s next-generation Strong Hybrid e-Boxer system. This completely reengineered setup blends a 2.5-litre Boxer engine with an electric motor and high-voltage lithium-ion battery to deliver fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and a smoother, more responsive drive.

The engine operates on the Atkinson/Miller cycle, a combustion method that enhances thermal efficiency and reduces energy loss. The next-generation Forester Hybrid can drive using electric power alone at low speeds and provides electric motor assist when accelerating, climbing hills or navigating low-traction surfaces. The system also delivers greater instant torque from standstill thanks to its electric motor, giving drivers confident and responsive acceleration

This significant setup in hybrid technology enables intuitive performance and reduced fuel consumption in real-world conditions. Importantly, it offers a combined driving range of over 1,000km per tank1, giving drivers greater freedom and fewer fuel stops on long-distance journeys.

High voltage battery

The Forester Hybrid features a compact, lightweight, and high-efficiency lithium-ion battery designed for long life and high energy density. The battery stores regenerative and engine-generated energy to support the vehicle’s drive power and is positioned low under the cargo space to preserve cabin and luggage capacity. It also contributes to a lower centre of gravity for improved handling.

The battery control unit monitors voltage, current, and temperature to maintain optimal charging status. Its design and location have been engineered for crash safety, with a strengthened enclosure and chassis framework that protect the battery from intrusion or damage in the event of a collision.

Battery cooling system

The high-voltage battery is cooled via an integrated system that draws cabin air through an intake vent located on the left side of the rear seat trim. When the battery reaches high operating temperatures, internal fans circulate this air through the battery pack to ensure stable thermal management.

A grille and filter protect the intake from dust and debris, while the fan’s compact design allows luggage space to remain unaffected. If cooling performance declines or temperatures exceed safe limits, the system issues a warning through the driver’s display. This helps ensure consistent performance and long-term battery health, even with New Zealand’s famously changeable climate.

EV Mode

Forester Hybrid variants feature a driver-selectable EV Drive Mode that allows the vehicle to operate solely on electric power at speeds up to 30km/h for short distances, depending on battery charge and driving conditions.

This helps reduce emissions and noise, making it ideal for quiet residential streets or enclosed areas like carparks. A visual indicator on the instrument display confirms when the system is active.

This feature is particularly useful during stop-start traffic or when arriving home late at night. A proximity alert sound is also emitted at low speeds to help alert pedestrians to the vehicle’s presence.

Editor’s Note: EV Drive Mode operation may be limited in cold temperatures or when battery levels are low. Excessive use may impact overall fuel efficiency as the hybrid system is optimised for blended operation.

TRANSMISSIONS

Lineartronic® CVT

For petrol-only variants power is delivered through Subaru’s latest-generation Lineartronic® CVT. Tuned for stronger take-off and smoother highway cruising, the CVT now features a broader gear ratio range (8.1, up from 7.0). New lower first and reverse gearing improves performance on hills, while an 8-speed manual mode enhances driver engagement. The CVT is paired with Subaru’s Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive system, which constantly adjusts torque distribution for better handling and traction in varied conditions.

TH2B Hybrid Transaxle

Hybrid variants use Subaru’s TH2B hybrid transaxle, which blends petrol and electric power without the need for a traditional CVT. This advanced system utilises a planetary gearset (power split device) and dual motor-generators to manage both propulsion and energy regeneration. One motor drives the wheels and provides regenerative braking, while the other handles engine starts and battery recharging.

Replacing the traditional torque converter, a transaxle damper suppresses excess torque and vibration — delivering smoother acceleration, reduced noise, and a more refined drive feel, especially in stop-start traffic or low-speed conditions.

Unlike the petrol CVT, the hybrid transaxle doesn’t rely on pulleys or chains. Instead, it coordinates petrol and electric outputs electronically, enabling seamless power blending that results in intuitive, quiet and confident performance.

Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive)

Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) is standard across all Forester variants, allowing drivers to tailor the vehicle’s response to suit different conditions and preferences. There are two modes available:

  • Intelligent (I) Mode: Optimises throttle and engine response for smooth, efficient driving. Ideal for everyday commuting and situations where fuel economy is a priority.
  • Sport (S) Mode: Delivers sharper throttle response and holds higher engine speeds for more immediate acceleration. In this mode, the vehicle adopts closer gear ratios through Auto Stepped Speed Control, creating a sportier, more engaging drive feel.

SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) system is a core part of the Forester DNA, engineered to deliver confident handling, balance and grip in all conditions. With its unique layout featuring a longitudinally mounted Boxer engine and symmetrical drivetrain, SAWD provides optimal weight distribution and a low centre of gravity for composed, predictable performance.

All Forester variants are equipped with SAWD, which continuously powers all four wheels to maximise traction across varied terrain, whether on wet roads, gravel tracks or uneven surfaces.

What sets the all-new Forester Hybrid apart is its integration of Subaru’s next-generation Strong Hybrid system with mechanical, always-on SAWD. This is a first in its class. The electric motor contributes torque to all four wheels, enhancing traction during take-off, climbing and low-speed manoeuvres. Regenerative braking is also supported across all driven wheels, helping to recover energy while maintaining control and drivability.

This seamless coordination of electric and mechanical systems means Forester Hybrid delivers added efficiency and smoothness without compromising the all-terrain capability Subaru drivers expect.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS

Subaru Global Platform

At the heart of the sixth-generation Subaru Forester lies an advanced evolution of the Subaru Global Platform - the foundation for improved handling, comfort and collision safety. The new Forester builds on this architecture with enhanced structural rigidity and body integrity.

Using a full inner-frame construction and significantly increasing structural adhesive from approximately 8 metres to nearly 27 metres, the platform delivers a 10% increase in chassis torsional rigidity. These enhancements enable better transfer of dynamic forces –acceleration, braking, cornering – to the road surface, resulting in optimal tyre contact and control.

Reinforced suspension mounting points and refined body joints further improve ride stability, ensuring Forester feels composed and agile across a wide range of conditions.

Suspension

Forester’s suspension has been carefully tuned to deliver a confident balance of ride comfort and responsive handling. Hybrid and petrol variants feature slight differences in suspension tuning to complement their respective powertrains. This ensures that, regardless of drivetrain, every Forester delivers the composed, controlled ride and dynamic feel that drivers expect from Subaru.

Revised coil spring rates allow for improved absorption of surface irregularities and more controlled body movement through optimised damper response.

An aerodynamic cover has been added to the front subframe support, paired with a reshaped structure to minimise airflow resistance through the suspension area. The front stabiliser clamp has been strengthened to increase bushing retention under high suspension stroke conditions, ensuring consistent roll resistance.

Additionally, increased chassis rigidity allows the suspension to operate more efficiently, helping to reduce body roll and pitch while enhancing comfort over uneven terrain.

Hybrid variants feature distinctive ‘ultra-saturating dampers’ both front and rear. These dampers feature higher levels of dynamic performance as well as ride comfort by utilising smaller port holes to vary to the damping force dependent on damper impact compression speed.

Furthermore, the AWD Hybrid Sport features a unique damper design. Specialised valving allows the fluid within the damper to flow through differing oaths, dependant on the suspension’s load type and frequency. This allows for more sporty handling through winding roads and a smooth, comfortable ride on the open highway.

Dual-pinion steering

The all-new Forester adopts a dual-pinion electric power steering system, first introduced in the WRX. This design separates the driver input shaft from the electric assist motor, which reduces mechanical resistance and eliminates unwanted feedback from the motor.

The result is smoother, more linear torque delivery and a steering feel that is more precise and immediate. Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) steering adjusts the steering response based on wheel angle. This results in light, responsive feel during parking and sharper reaction at higher speeds, enhancing both manoeuvrability and high-speed stability.

Braking System

Braking performance across the Forester range has been redeveloped for improved pedal feel, control and stopping power. All variants are fitted with front twin-pot and rear single-pot disc callipers, with hybrid models gaining larger front rotors for enhanced thermal capacity.

Revised brake booster calibration and new copper-free pad material optimise stopping consistency while supporting environmental sustainability. A large-diameter piston ensures high braking stability, particularly during repeated stops or high-load conditions.

Hybrid models also use an electronically controlled brake system that blends regenerative and friction braking. This AHB-G system adjusts braking pressure based on vehicle dynamics for seamless energy recovery and consistent pedal feedback.

A new electric brake booster also features across the range. This system enhances brake response in emergency situations and works in harmony with Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist system, including Pre-Collision Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control, to maximise stopping performance.

An electric park brake is standard across all Forester variants.

Vehicle Dynamics Control

Every Subaru Forester is equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) – a comprehensive suite of stability, traction and braking technologies designed to support the driver in unpredictable conditions.

Unlike basic stability systems, Subaru’s VDC integrates multiple control functions:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Automatically applies individual brakes and adjusts engine power to help correct understeer or oversteer.
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): Prevents wheel lock-up during sudden braking for more controlled stops.
  • Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD): Optimises braking pressure between front and rear wheels.
  • Brake Assist: Delivers maximum braking force in emergency situations—even if the driver doesn’t apply full pedal pressure.
  • Traction Control System (TCS): Reduces engine power if excessive wheelspin is detected.
  • Active Torque Vectoring: Applies braking to the inside wheels during cornering to reduce understeer and improve turn-in.
  • Brake Override System: Prioritises braking if the accelerator and brake are pressed simultaneously.
  • Limited Slip Device (LSD): Applies braking to spinning wheels and transfers torque to the opposite side for better traction on low-grip surfaces.

Improved Quietness

Cabin noise levels have been significantly reduced through structural enhancements and improved soundproofing materials. An improvement in sound pressure damping thanks to the utilisation of high-mastic material helps mitigate harsh impacts and reduce perceived road harshness.

Increased glass thickness and optimised silencer coatings help suppress wind and engine noise, while added insulation in key body areas contributes to a more peaceful cabin. These changes support a quieter and more comfortable driving experience, especially on highways or rough surfaces.

Increased Comfort

Forester’s seating system has been reengineered for better support, stability and ride quality. A sacrum-stabilising design reduces upper body movement during cornering, and new lumbar support structures distribute pressure more evenly.

Seat rails are now directly affixed to the chassis, increasing rigidity and reducing vibration transmission to occupants. Together, these updates minimise fatigue and improve long-distance comfort.

These dynamic upgrades work together to deliver a driving experience that is controlled, composed and confidence-inspiring, without sacrificing everyday usability.

REACREATIONAL CAPABILITY

For decades, the Forester has stood as a benchmark for go-anywhere versatility — the kind of vehicle you can trust whether you’re chasing adventure off the beaten path or navigating tricky terrain close to home. With each generation, Subaru has refined this capability, and the all-new Forester takes it further with advanced technologies designed to make rough-road driving easier, safer and more intuitive.

Every Forester is engineered with the adventurous Kiwi driver in mind, blending rugged capability, intuitive driver-assist tech, and practical features that make it the perfect companion for a life spent exploring.

X-Mode & Hill Descent Control

Every Forester feature Subaru’s advanced X-Mode system, an intuitive terrain management tool designed to support drivers in low-traction environments such as deep snow, or muddy trails. Activated via the central infotainment screen, X-Mode helps optimise engine, transmission and braking performance to maintain control and traction.

Higher-grade variants feature 2-Mode X-Mode, offering both Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings to suit a wider range of conditions. Other variants are equipped with single-mode X-Mode, providing Snow/Dirt mode for confident performance on gravel, wet roads or light off-road terrain.

The system coordinates multiple drivetrain and chassis inputs, optimising engine throttle, transmission response, braking force and all-wheel torque distribution to help the vehicle maintain traction and momentum across uneven or slippery terrain.

To further support safe off-road driving, Hill Descent Control automatically regulates speed on steep declines without requiring brake input from the driver. This frees the driver to focus solely on steering and path selection — especially helpful on challenging descents or when reversing down steep, rutted tracks.

Key system features include:

  • Engine Torque Control: Adjusts throttle sensitivity to deliver smooth or aggressive torque based on terrain demands
  • AWD Drive Distribution: Prioritises 50:50 torque split initially, adapting dynamically to terrain and load conditions
  • Brake-Limited Slip Control: Transfers power away from slipping wheels to those with grip, keeping momentum on uneven surfaces
  • Automatic Restore: X-Mode deactivates above 40 km/h and automatically re-engages below 35 km/h for continuous support

With 220mm of ground clearance2, generous approach and departure angles and flexible cargo-carrying solutions like roof rails and wide rear gate access, the Forester is equipped to handle whatever the journey demands.

Whether you're heading for the mountains, towing the boat to the coast, or taking the scenic route down a gravel backroad, the all-new Forester carries on Subaru’s legacy of delivering real-world SUV capability wherever your journey leads.
